Hunter pet finder

Forever has 18 pet families, each with one ability no other family gets. This finder lists the 530 tameable beasts of Classic, 64 of them rare, with their zones, levels and the ability ranks they knew; 527 are level 60 or below, the other 3 level 61 (Zul'Gurub). A rare keeps its look and sometimes its attack speed, not better stats. On Forever you can't tame a beast above your level.

Classic beasts from cMaNGOS classic-db, Forever families from the beta game files (build 1.60.1.70532)

Find a beast to tame

Pick a family, your level, a zone or an ability rank. Each result shows where the beast spawned in Classic, its level, whether it is rare and the ranks it taught. Coordinates are those of the zone map, approximate near zone borders. These are Classic spawns: Forever may have moved some beasts, so check in game before a long trip.

Only beasts at or below this level: on Forever, Tame Beast fails on a higher one.

What a rare pet gives you, and what it doesn't

A tamed rare keeps two things of its own: its look and its attack speed. Health, armor and damage come from the pet's level and family, exactly as for a common beast of that family. Speed changes the rhythm, not the damage over time: a faster pet hits more often for less. On Forever, pets also gain stats from your gear.

  • Its look. The pet keeps the model and skin of the beast you tamed. In the Classic data, 7 rares wear a look no other tameable beast has: Mazzranache, Strider Clutchmother, Humar the Pridelord, Araga, Old Cliff Jumper, Uhk'loc and Rak'shiri.
  • Its attack speed. 73 Classic beasts attack faster or slower than their family's usual speed, like Broken Tooth (1.0 s, cat 1.3 s). Forever's beta files add pet passives named Faster Attack (I to VII) and Slower Attack (II and III); what they apply to is not published, so whether a beast keeps its own speed on Forever is not confirmed.
  • Not its stats. In Classic, every hunter pet got the same base stats for its level, adjusted by its family: a rare level 37 cat has the health and armor of any level 37 cat (cMaNGOS server code).
  • Its ability ranks, in Classic. A beast could know ranks you had not learned yet; taming it and using them taught them to you. 298 beasts of the Classic data knew at least one rank.

How pet abilities work: Classic and Forever

On Forever, every family has one ability of its own, plus Bite or Claw and Dive or Dash, says Blizzard. The beta files give each rank a pet level: Web, Swipe and Dismember ranks unlock at pet levels 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60. In Classic, a beast came with the ranks it knew and taught them to you. Whether Forever still works that way is not confirmed.

In Classic

  • Families shared most abilities (Bite, Claw, Dash, Dive, Cower, Growl), and some had their own: Prowl for cats, Charge for boars, Furious Howl for wolves, Thunderstomp for gorillas, Scorpid Poison, Shell Shield for turtles, Lightning Breath for wind serpents, Screech for bats, owls and carrion birds.
  • A tamed beast arrived with the ranks it knew. Using them in fights taught the rank to you, and you could then teach it to any pet with Beast Training, paying training points.
  • So a higher rank meant finding a beast that knew it: the table further down lists them.

On Forever

  • Each family has one ability no other family learns (Blizzard, Class Deep Dive of September 30, 2026); 10 of these are new. The family cards below list them.
  • Every family learns Bite or Claw, sometimes both, and Dive or Dash (Blizzard).
  • Each rank needs a pet level in the beta files, for example Furious Howl at 10, 24, 40 and 56, Trickster's Dance at 20.
  • Beast Training and training points are still in the beta interface.
  • Pets gain stats from your gear and no longer take your stat buffs (Blizzard).
  • The Owl family is now Bird of Prey, and the Fox is a new family (Blizzard).

Not confirmed yet

  • How a pet gets higher ranks on Forever. Blizzard's beta notes of October 1 mention tameable beasts whose ability ranks were too high for their level, so beasts still carry ranks, but the rule is not published.
  • Where foxes live: Classic had no tameable fox, and creature spawns are not in the game files.
  • Beast levels and spawns: Blizzard raised creatures around Shadowvale in Tirisfal (October 8 notes), and the beta files place the Valley of Bones in Shen'dralas instead of Desolace.

The 18 pet families of Forever

Forever keeps the 17 Classic families, renames the Owl to Bird of Prey and adds the Fox. Each card gives the family's names, its diet, its unique ability with the pet levels its ranks unlock at, whether it learns Bite or Claw and Dive or Dash, and the rare beasts of that family in the Classic data, with their level and zone.

Where to learn each ability rank (Classic data)

In Classic, the way to a higher Bite, Claw, Dash or Charge rank was a beast that already knew it. This table gives, for each rank a Classic beast taught, the pet level it needs and the lowest-level beasts that knew it, with their zone. Forever has not confirmed that beasts still teach ranks, so treat each line as a lead to check in game.

How to tame a beast on Forever

Hunters get Tame Beast at level 10 in the beta files. Target a beast at or below your level: Blizzard's beta notes of September 24 say Tame Beast no longer works on higher ones. The 20-second channel reduces your armor by 100% and fails if the beast stops focusing on you. Feed your new pet at once: a freshly tamed beast is unhappy.

  1. Reach level 10: Tame Beast, Call Pet, Feed Pet, Revive Pet and Dismiss Pet are level 10 spells in the beta files.
  2. From level 24, Beast Lore on a beast shows its damage, health, armor, resistances and diet.
  3. Check its level: at or below yours. Set your level in the finder to see only those.
  4. Pull it away from other monsters, then cast Tame Beast and let the 20 seconds run.
  5. Feed the pet right away with food of its diet (see the family cards): casting Feed Pet opens your bags and marks the food your pet can eat.
  6. One pet out at a time: in the beta interface, the stable master keeps your active pet plus up to two stabled ones, in slots you buy there.

Hunter pet questions

What is the best rare pet for leveling in WoW Forever?

No rare is stronger: health, armor and damage come from the pet's level and family. Choose the family instead. On Forever each family has one ability of its own, for example Charge for boars, Swipe for bears or Furious Howl for wolves, and bears and boars eat 6 kinds of food, the easiest to feed. A rare only adds its look and, for a few, a faster attack.

Where can I tame a wolf in WoW Forever?

In the Classic data, the lowest-level wolves are Ragged Young Wolf (level 1, Dun Morogh), Young Scavenger (level 1, Tirisfal Glades), Young Wolf (level 1, Elwynn Forest) and Prairie Wolf (levels 5-6, Mulgore). Forever may have moved some beasts, so check in game. Set the Wolf family and your level in the finder on this page to see every wolf and its zones.

Do rare pets have better stats than normal ones?

No. In Classic, a tamed beast's health, armor and damage depend on its level and family, not on the beast. A rare keeps its look and its own attack speed; a faster pet hits more often for less damage per hit. On Forever, pets also gain stats from your gear (Blizzard, September 30, 2026), and nothing announced makes rares stronger.

Can I tame a beast above my level on Forever?

No. Blizzard's beta notes of September 24, 2026 say Tame Beast no longer works on beasts higher than the hunter's level. Set your level in the finder on this page: it shows only the beasts at or below it.

How do pets learn abilities on Forever?

Blizzard says every family learns Bite or Claw, Dive or Dash, and one ability of its own; the beta files give the pet level of each rank. Beast Training with training points is still in the beta interface. Whether ranks still come from taming a beast that knows them, as in Classic, is not confirmed yet.

Where can I tame a fox in WoW Forever?

Foxes are a new family on Forever, with Trickster's Dance: more dodge and attack speed for 12 seconds, from pet level 20. Classic had no tameable fox, and where creatures spawn is not in the game files, so no reliable list of fox locations exists yet.

Which pet families can hunters tame in WoW Forever?

Blizzard lists 18 families: Wolf, Cat, Spider, Bear, Boar, Crocolisk, Carrion Bird, Crab, Gorilla, Raptor, Tallstrider, Scorpid, Turtle, Bat, Hyena, Bird of Prey, Wind Serpent and Fox. The Owl family is now called Bird of Prey, and the Fox is new.

Method and sources

Beasts, levels, spawns and ability ranks come from cMaNGOS classic-db (Classic DB 1.12.1 "Melting Pot v2"), a community rebuild of the Classic world. Zones come from the Classic Era map files (build 1.15.9.70003); a spawn inside two zone maps takes the zone of its neighbours, so a few spawns near borders may sit in the next zone. Families, diets, unique abilities and rank levels come from the Forever beta files (build 1.60.1.70532).

  • Tameable means a Beast with a family and the tameable flag, the test the cMaNGOS server makes. 588 beasts pass; 58 have no fixed spawn (summoned by quests or unused) and are left out.
  • Names are classic-db's English names: the game client ships no creature names (the server sends them), so French pages show the English name.
  • Ability ranks: the beast's pet spell list in classic-db, read in the Classic Era CreatureSpellData table, as the cMaNGOS server does when you tame it.
  • Attack speed: classic-db's melee attack time, shown when it differs from the family's most common one. Unique look: none of the beast's models and skins (Classic Era CreatureDisplayInfo) is worn by another tameable beast.
  • Zone changes on Forever: zones whose map changed in the beta files (Mulgore, Redridge, Eastern Plaguelands, Stormwind) or that Blizzard reworked (Tirisfal, Wetlands, Desolace) carry a note.
  • No Blizzard art, models or other sites' data: the family colors are ours.
