WoW Forever gold rules: gold buying, GDKP, trading and what gets you banned
Yuki9 min read
In short
Buying or selling gold for real money gets you sanctioned on WoW Forever, and Blizzard now goes after buyers too, with penalties from gold removal to permanent account closure. Announced on October 13, 2026, the Temporary Economy Hold can restrict trade, mail, guild banks and the auction house while a suspicion is checked. There is no WoW Token and no paid boost, and GDKP is reported as not allowed.
Key points
- Blizzard acts against gold buyers' accounts, not only sellers, including players who knew or should have known the gold was bought (Kaivax, September 28, 2026).
- Penalties go from gold removal to account suspension or permanent closure (Kaivax, October 1, 2026).
- The Temporary Economy Hold (October 13, 2026) restricts trade, mail, guild banks and the auction house, and lifts automatically if the suspicion is false.
- No WoW Token and no paid boost are planned, according to the developers; GDKP is reported as not allowed, with no written Blizzard rule yet.
- On the beta, the auction house refused listings below the lowest price, and Black Market vendors sold rare goods at fixed prices.
Can you get banned for buying gold in WoW Forever?
Yes. On September 28, 2026, community manager Kaivax wrote that Blizzard "will increasingly take action against buyers' accounts" on WoW Forever, not only against sellers and bots. This also covers a player who receives bought gold and "knew or should-have-known" where it came from. On October 1, he listed the penalties: "gold being removed, account suspensions, or permanent account closures".
| Date | Post | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| September 28 | Kaivax, buyers | Action against buyers' accounts, including recipients who "knew or should-have-known" |
| October 1 | Kaivax, trading | A warning when you trade with strangers; penalties from gold removal to permanent account closure |
| October 13 | Kaivax, Temporary Economy Hold | Trade, mail, guild banks and the auction house restricted while a suspicion is checked |
The beta already shows the scale. A developer said on Blizzard's Forever podcast that Blizzard had closed "over 2,100 gold-buying accounts" and "almost 1,600 gold-selling or botting accounts" on the beta, as reported by MassivelyOP on October 9, 2026 (the article's headline speaks of over 4,000 accounts in all).
What is the Temporary Economy Hold in WoW Forever?
The Temporary Economy Hold is an anti real-money-trading tool that Kaivax announced for WoW Forever on October 13, 2026. An account under suspicion gets "restricted use of trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House" while Blizzard checks. If the suspicion is false, the hold is lifted automatically and leaves "no permanent strikes". Blizzard plans to use it in every version of WoW if it works.
- What it restricts: trading with other players, the mailbox, guild banks and the auction house.
- What it is not: a ban. The hold is temporary and, when the suspicion is false, it ends on its own with no permanent mark on the account.
- Beyond Forever: Blizzard says it "will also be deployed to all versions of World of Warcraft if proven successful".
Icy Veins called it Blizzard's new tool in the fight against real-money trading, and PC Gamer a new kind of ban (October 14, 2026). As of October 15, 2026, Blizzard has not said how long a check lasts.
Why does WoW Forever warn you when you trade with a stranger?
Kaivax announced the WoW Forever warning for trades with strangers on October 1, 2026, together with the penalties for gold trading: gold removed, account suspension or permanent closure. It fits Blizzard's new line on buyers: the rule also targets a recipient who "knew or should-have-known" that the gold was bought, so a trade with an unknown player is where you should look twice.
Blizzard's posts don't list which trades count as suspicious, and players are already asking how selling enchants or other crafting services will work if taking gold from strangers is risky. As of October 15, 2026, the rule to keep in mind is Kaivax's own: the recipient is responsible when they knew, or should have known, that the gold was bought.
Is GDKP allowed in WoW Forever?
GDKP, the raid format where players bid gold on loot, is reported as not allowed in WoW Forever: MassivelyOP's summary of Blizzard's Q&A after BlizzCon (September 19, 2026) says Forever will have no GDKP. We found no written Blizzard rule or blue post about it, and the beta forum thread asking for GDKP had no Blizzard reply as of October 15, 2026.
Until Blizzard writes a rule down, the safe reading is simple: don't organize or join raids where loot is sold for gold. Remember that Blizzard sanctions players who receive bought gold, not only those who sell it.
Is there a WoW Token or a paid boost in WoW Forever?
No. WoW Forever has no WoW Token and no paid boost planned, according to the developers at BlizzCon (MassivelyOP, September 14, 2026), and PC Gamer reported no subscription token "on launch". Mamytwink also reported no boost or catch-up system, in the shop or elsewhere. One link remains: game time bought with a WoW Token in Modern WoW still pays the subscription that includes Forever.
Blizzard also designed Forever against gold farming and dungeon boosting:
- Mage farming nerfed: Cone of Cold lasts less, "to reduce the ability of gold farmers and experience boosters to kite large numbers of creatures", and Improved Blizzard's slow is capped at 40% instead of 65% (Blizzard's Mage and Shaman deep dive, October 7, 2026).
- No XP from a high-level helper: since the October 8 beta notes, "if a member of the party is at a vastly higher level than the enemy being killed, then no player in the party will receive XP, as intended."
- No dungeon cleaving to 60: developer Aggrend wrote on October 8 that it "does not pass that muster and we need to hold firm".
- Subscription only: Customer Support confirmed that any subscription works, "or even the game time that comes from a WoW Token purchased for gold in Modern WoW" (September 18, 2026).
What are the Black Market and the price-cap vendors in WoW Forever?
On the WoW Forever beta, players found a Black Market Auction House at Powderfuse Port in Riverglades, run by Madame Lanarq (Mamytwink citing Wowhead, September 29, 2026), and a goblin vendor, Mister Graphed, who sells rare materials and the Gift of Galloping. PC Gamer reads these vendors as a cap on the price of rare reagents, and the developers said a vendor sells Black Lotus to cap its price.
| What | Price | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Gift of Galloping: +10% mounted speed for 15 days, level 60 | 150 g | PC Gamer, Mamytwink |
| Rare crafting materials, including the new Fel Crystal and Stranglevine | 20 g and more | PC Gamer |
| Arcane Crystal | 50 g | Mamytwink |
| Classic dungeon set pieces, such as the Magister's set (Black Market Auction House) | Not reported | Mamytwink, citing Wowhead |
The Black Lotus example comes from the developers' PAX Aus interviews, summarised by JudgeHype on October 13, 2026: a vendor sells it to cap its price. They also said more gold will come from level-60 activities. None of these prices is official, and all of them come from the beta.
Can you undercut at the WoW Forever auction house?
Not on the beta. In October 2026, the WoW Forever auction house refused any listing cheaper than the lowest auction already posted, with an "internal error" message, and players asked on Blizzard's beta forums whether this is intended. As of October 15, 2026, Blizzard had not replied and had published no auction house listing rules or price caps, so this may change at launch.
The last beta notes, posted on October 15, 2026, added an equippable-level column and the stats of items with suffixes to the auction house, but said nothing about this rule, and the beta closed on October 23. In practice, you list at the price of the next auction and let buyers take the cheaper ones first. Our auction house gold guide explains how to make gold with that rule, our professions guide shows which crafts pay, and the auction house prices page shows the scan made on the beta. Beta gold doesn't matter for launch anyway: Blizzard Support states that "progress in Beta will not be carried over after official launch".
How do you keep your account safe from gold sanctions in WoW Forever?
To stay safe on WoW Forever, never buy or sell gold, items or services for real money, read the warning before trading with a stranger, and only accept gold that matches a real in-game deal. If your account gets a Temporary Economy Hold, Blizzard's only published step is the automatic lift when the suspicion is false, with no permanent strike; as of October 15, 2026, it has published no appeal process.
- No real money, ever: buying gold, selling gold or paying cash for a run is what Blizzard sanctions, on the buyer's side too.
- Read the stranger warning: when the game warns you about a trade with a stranger, check that the gold matches a real deal, such as an item, a craft or an enchant.
- Stay out of GDKP until Blizzard publishes a written rule.
- Make your gold in game: quests, crafts and the auction house, as in our auction house gold guide.
If your account gets a Temporary Economy Hold
- Blizzard says the hold is lifted automatically if the suspicion is false and leaves "no permanent strikes" (Kaivax, October 13, 2026).
- As of October 15, 2026, Blizzard has published no appeal form and no time limit for the hold. We'll add them here when it does.
- On the beta, Game Masters "do not have access or tools to interact with Beta" (Customer Support, October 2, 2026), and Customer Support asks testers to use the in-game bug report.
- A beta ban applies only to the beta account and does not carry over to launch: "That includes naming reservations" (Customer Support, October 6 and 7, 2026).
