What was the WoW Forever Server Slam?
The WoW Forever Server Slam, which Blizzard's article of October 15, 2026 calls the Server Stress Test, opened the game for a few hours on October 21 so that anyone could play without a subscription. The goal was load: as many players as possible at once, two weeks before the November 4 launch. It ran on the regional launch hardware, and every character was wiped afterwards.
Blizzard had promised it in its beta article of September 17: "we'll also open the servers for several hours so that anyone can access the WoW: Forever beta during that window for a 'Server Slam.'" Kaivax then wrote that the game would be "available on production realms for a few hours" and open "on its proper regional hardware": the beta went offline before the test and came back after it.

Every region closed at the same moment, 1 a.m. UTC. Blizzard had first announced it for October 19.

Blizzard announced the test on October 15 for Monday, October 19, then wrote on October 16: "The WoW: Forever Server Stress Test is moving to October 21 (previously October 19)." The start times did not change, and the article warned that "the test window may end earlier or run later as needed". No second stress test is announced as of October 25, 2026.
How did you join the WoW Forever stress test?
Players joined the WoW Forever stress test through the Battle.net app: World of Warcraft, the Game Version menu above the Play button, then Stress Test under "In Development". Once installed, they pressed Play when the test began, picked an available test realm and created a new character. Blizzard asked everyone to update their graphics drivers first. The entry only served this test.
- Update the graphics drivers and the Battle.net app.
- Select World of Warcraft, then the Game Version menu above the Play button.
- Choose Stress Test under In Development and install it.
- Once the test began: Play, an available test realm, a new character.
Was the WoW Forever stress test free?
Yes. Blizzard's article said that "anyone can take part and no subscription, Game Time, invitation, or beta access is required", so a Battle.net account was enough to try WoW Forever for a few hours on October 21, 2026, without a pack or a subscription. The next free way to play is an Invite-A-Friend code sent by a pack owner, valid from November 4 to 11, 2026.
Subscription, packs and the other ways to play: is WoW Forever free?
Did WoW Forever stress test characters carry over to launch?
No. Blizzard wiped everything when the WoW Forever stress test closed: "all created characters, names, and guilds will be wiped from the Stress Test servers", and Kaivax added that "this is a complete wipe; names and everything else will be completely removed." A name taken during the test was not reserved. Names are reserved from October 27 with a pack, and beta progress does not carry over either.
How did the WoW Forever stress test go, and what comes next?
Blizzard has posted no results of the WoW Forever stress test as of October 25, 2026. MeinMMO's live ticker saw about an hour with no ruleset available at the European start, then logins with no queue and smooth play until the end, around 3 a.m. Paris time. Next: the beta closed on October 23, name reservation opens on October 27 and launch follows on November 4.
Also according to MeinMMO, developers said in chat around 9:45 p.m. Paris time that they were deliberately crashing some background services, and the game stayed playable; some creatures vanished in the middle of fights. On Blizzard's forums, players described a crowded Stormwind and characters flickering between layers. These are observations, not figures from Blizzard.
- How to install addons: the AddOns folder, out-of-date addons and Lua errors.
- Name reservation from October 27, then the launch checklist and the interface settings for November 4.
