WoW Forever vs Classic Era vs Retail: the differences
Yuki12 min read
In short
WoW Forever is a third World of Warcraft, separate from Classic Era and Retail, launching November 4, 2026. Like Classic Era, it stops at level 60 with no flying and no level scaling, but it adds four regions, nine dungeons, two raids, the Skyborne race and reworked talents, on the modern client. Retail (Midnight) goes to level 90 with 13 classes and flying. Forever and Classic Era come with a WoW subscription; Midnight is sold separately.
Key points
- Blizzard calls Forever a "new, third World of Warcraft experience alongside Modern and Classic", not a mode or a season of Classic.
- Forever and Classic Era both stop at level 60; Retail's Midnight expansion goes to level 90.
- Forever adds four regions, nine dungeons, two raids (December 9, 2026), the Skyborne race and six new race and class combinations to the classic world.
- Forever has no realms: you pick a ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP, Hardcore later), and names are unique per region.
- Forever runs on the modern client and shares most of modern WoW's addon code, so Classic Era addons often need an update.
What is WoW Forever compared with Classic Era and Retail?
WoW Forever is a separate game, which Blizzard calls a "new, third World of Warcraft experience alongside Modern and Classic" and "not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic". It keeps Classic's level 60, with no flying and no level scaling, but runs on the modern client with new content. Classic Era is the original game; Retail is modern WoW with its Midnight expansion.

Forever and Classic Era share the classic world map, the nine original classes and level 60. The sections below go through each difference with its source; for everything new at launch, see our release guide.
Is WoW Forever just Classic with new content?
No. WoW Forever keeps the classic world and level 60 but changes most systems. Blizzard announced four new or opened regions (Riverglades, Zephras Isle, Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas), over 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons, two new raids and the Skyborne race, plus reworked talents, racials, items, professions and PvP. Classic Era keeps the original content, and Retail moves on to level 90 with Midnight.
| System | What's new in Forever | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Zones | Riverglades (mid-30s to mid-40s), Zephras Isle (1 to 12), Mount Hyjal and Shen'dralas; over 1,000 new quests | Zones |
| Dungeons | Nine new dungeons from level 13 to 60, from the Hall of Thanes (13 to 18) to Shaper's Terrace (58 to 60) | Dungeons |
| Raids | Barrow Deeps (10 players, 8 bosses) and Hyjal Summit (20 players, 13 bosses), plus Onyxia's Lair (40), on December 9, 2026 | Raids |
| Race | The Skyborne: Windshaper (Horde) and High Order (Alliance), with the Heroic pack or higher | Skyborne |
| Race and class | Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin; every race has 2 active and 2 passive racials | Talents |
| Professions | Over 600 new recipes, Blueprints from dungeon bosses, the camping system | Professions, camping |
| Trade factions | Azeroth Commerce Authority (Alliance) and Durotar Supply and Logistics (Horde), with Merchant's Favor | Merchant's Favor |
| Legacy | 65 account-wide challenges; perks capped at 16 points per character at launch | Legacy |
| PvP | Honor as a currency, Rank Points with a weekly cap, Darkspear Islands (15 against 15, levels 30 to 60) | PvP |
The classic raids of Classic Era, from Molten Core to Naxxramas, are not on Forever's announced roadmap as of October 25, 2026. Blizzard's roadmap lists two new raids for Spring 2027 and an unnamed "revamped iconic raid" for Summer 2027, with the caveat "Content and timing subject to change".
How are talents and classes different in WoW Forever?
WoW Forever keeps the nine classic classes and Classic-style talent trees with the same number of rows as patch 1.12, but every class was reworked. Talents start at level 10, milestone talents sit at 11, 21 and 31 points plus a new 16-point milestone, and dual spec opens at level 40 at a class trainer. Retail has 13 classes with class, specialization and Hero talent trees.
- New abilities on every class: for example Penance and Prayer of Mending for Priests, Victory Rush at 20 for Warriors, Frostfire Bolt at 40 for Mages, Seal of Fury (a tank seal) for Paladins and Banes for Warlocks, from Blizzard's class deep dives.
- Buffs made baseline: Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings and Improved Mark of the Wild no longer need talent points.
- Racials: every race now has two active and two passive racials. On the beta, the October 15 notes replaced the weapon racials with plain crit bonuses: Ruthless for humans (2% crit), Savage for orcs (1%) and Earth Fury for dwarves (2% critical damage and healing).
- No new class: the beta files hold the same nine classes, and the developers said Shaman or Warlock tanking is "not quite yet" (PC Gamer, September 16, 2026).
- Dual spec on Classic: it was not part of the original game. Blizzard added it at level 40 to the fresh Classic Anniversary realms on November 27, 2024, so check the rules of the Classic realm you play.
Our talent calculator compares every Forever talent with Classic Era 1.15.9 (new, changed, reworded, removed), and the talents guide sums up each class.
How do realms work in Forever compared with Classic and Retail?
WoW Forever has no realms. Instead of a server, you pick a ruleset at launch (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP, with Hardcore later), and each ruleset is one large ecosystem per region split into layers. Character names have two parts and are unique per region. Classic Era and Retail keep named realms, and Classic Era has had official Hardcore realms since August 24, 2023.
| Ruleset | When | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | At launch | PvP only with mutual consent |
| PvP | At launch | One faction per account; character creation may be limited for a while for one faction |
| Roleplaying | At launch | Both factions allowed |
| Roleplay-PvP | At launch (added on October 22, 2026) | Roleplay with PvP; as of October 25, Blizzard has not said whether it is one faction per account like PvP |
| Hardcore | Winter, after launch | A closed ecosystem with no battlegrounds; a dead character can move to another ruleset, PvP included |
- One choice per character: a ruleset can't be changed; playing elsewhere means a new character there.
- Account-wide: collections and Legacy points are shared; Hardcore progress counts on the other rulesets, never the reverse.
- Names: a first name and a second name, unique per region, reserved by pack owners from October 27 (6 p.m. CET in Europe, 1 p.m. PDT in North America) to November 3, 2026, Roleplay-PvP included (name reservation).
- Language: no French or other language realm is announced; Forever has a "Preferred Online Language" option instead (language servers).

What changes for professions, gold and the auction house?
WoW Forever adds over 600 profession recipes, Blueprints dropped by dungeon bosses, a camping system and two trade factions paid in Merchant's Favor, according to Blizzard. The developers say Forever has no WoW Token, unlike Retail, where a WoW Token bought with gold gives 30 days of game time, and no paid boost. Blizzard also added a Temporary Economy Hold against real-money gold trading.
- Camping: the Cooking Fire becomes the Basic Campfire, a campsite with profession objects and 1-hour buffs that don't stack with class buffs (camping guide).
- Trade factions: Waylaid Crates and commissions earn Merchant's Favor for profession rewards and titles (Merchant's Favor).
- Anti real-money trading: Blizzard acts against gold buyers' accounts too (September 28, 2026), and the Temporary Economy Hold restricts trade, mail, guild banks and the auction house while a suspicion is checked (October 13, 2026).
- Auction house on the beta: listings below the lowest price failed with an internal error in October 2026 (a player report with no Blizzard reply); Blizzard has not published Forever's auction house rules.
- Game time from Retail: Customer Support confirmed that game time from a WoW Token bought with gold in modern WoW also pays the subscription that includes Forever (September 18, 2026).
Community auction house prices from the beta are on our prices page, and the rules are in our gold rules guide.
What does the modern client change in WoW Forever?
WoW Forever runs on the modern game client, not on the classic client of Classic Era. Blizzard announced official gamepad support, HD or SD character models and opt-in transmog with a "Classic Mode" that turns it off, and the beta already has Edit Mode and the Cooldown Manager. Addons use modern WoW's code, so Classic Era addons often need an update to work.
| Topic | WoW Forever | Classic Era | Retail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game version | 1.60.1 (beta) | 1.15.9 | 12.1.5 |
| Addon file suffix | _Forever, or the _Mainline family | _Vanilla, or the _Classic family | _Standard, or the _Mainline family |
| Addon code | "The vast majority of APIs available in 12.1.5", with Midnight's restrictions | The classic client's own | 12.1.5 |
| Built-in tools | Cooldown Manager and damage meter | None | Cooldown Manager and damage meter |
| Models | HD or SD, modern or Classic visual presets | Classic models | Modern models |
The addon quote comes from a Blizzard representative in the WoW UI Discord, as reported by Icy Veins on September 17, 2026. A _Mainline addon also loads on Retail, so check that an addon really supports Forever: our compatibility list tracks 67 of them, and our install guide shows where the files go. Settings worth changing are in our interface guide.
Which World of Warcraft should you play: Classic, Forever or Retail?
It depends on what you want from the game. Classic Era keeps the original game of 2004 to 2006. WoW Forever keeps level 60, no flying and no level scaling, but adds new zones, dungeons, raids and systems on the modern client. Retail (Midnight) offers level 90, 13 classes, flying and housing. Forever and Classic Era come with the same subscription; Midnight is sold separately.
| If you want | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The original game, with its original content | Classic Era | The original world, dungeons and raids up to Naxxramas, level 60 |
| Classic gameplay with new zones, dungeons and raids | WoW Forever | 4 regions, 9 dungeons, 2 raids on December 9, 2026, level 60 |
| A permadeath challenge right now | Classic Era Hardcore realms | Forever's Hardcore ruleset is planned for the winter, not for launch |
| A new race in the classic world | WoW Forever | The Skyborne, with the Heroic pack or higher |
| Account-wide progress across alts | WoW Forever | Legacy points are shared by your characters outside Hardcore |
| The latest expansion, flying and housing | Retail (Midnight) | Level 90, Skyriding from level 10, player housing |
| A Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Monk or Evoker | Retail | Forever and Classic Era only have the nine original classes |
You can play several: Blizzard Customer Support said any subscription length works for Forever. Launch is November 4, 2026 at 3 p.m. PST (midnight on November 5 in Paris); see our launch checklist and price guide. Not sure which class to pick on Forever? Our six-question quiz suggests three.
Can you bring characters or collections from Classic or Retail to Forever?
No character transfer or copy from Classic Era or Retail to WoW Forever has been announced as of October 25, 2026, and Icy Veins reports that Forever "will not launch with the ability for characters to transfer". Blizzard Customer Support said mounts and pets not labeled for Forever are "unlikely" to be available there. Everyone starts a new character on November 4, 2026.
- Collections inside Forever are account-wide, and so are Legacy points outside Hardcore.
- Pack decor from the Skyborne packs is for housing in modern WoW, which needs Midnight.
- Beta progress is not kept at launch (Blizzard Support, updated October 14, 2026); the beta closed on October 23, 2026.
- Name reservation: pack owners can create up to three characters from October 27 to November 3, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between WoW Classic and WoW Forever?
Classic Era is the original game of 2004 to 2006. WoW Forever keeps level 60 and the classic world but adds four regions, nine dungeons, two raids, the Skyborne race, reworked talents and professions, and it runs on the modern client.
Is WoW Forever the same as Retail?
No. Retail is modern WoW with its Midnight expansion, level 90, 13 classes and flying. Forever stops at level 60 with no flying mounts and no level scaling.
Is WoW Forever included in my WoW subscription?
Yes. Blizzard says Forever is included with a WoW subscription or game time, like Classic Era. The Skyborne race needs a Skyborne pack, and Retail's Midnight expansion is sold separately.
What is the level cap in WoW Forever?
Level 60, like Classic Era. Retail's Midnight expansion goes to level 90.
Does WoW Forever have flying?
No. Blizzard's design rules for Forever are no flying mounts and no level scaling.
Do Classic Era addons work on WoW Forever?
Often not. Forever runs on the modern client and shares most of modern WoW's addon code, so addons need a version made or updated for Forever.
Can I transfer my Classic or Retail character to WoW Forever?
No transfer or copy has been announced as of October 25, 2026. Everyone starts a new character at launch, on November 4, 2026.
Does WoW Forever have realms?
No. Forever is realmless: you pick a ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP, Hardcore later) in your region, and character names are unique per region.
