WoW Forever realms: rulesets, regions, French players, names and transfers
Yuki9 min read
In short
WoW Forever has no realms: instead of a server, you pick a ruleset, Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP at launch on November 4, 2026, with Hardcore coming in winter. The game is still split by region, and names are unique per region. No French or other language realm has been announced; an account-wide Preferred Online Language setting is the only tool. Early name reservation opens on October 27, 2026 (6 p.m. CET in Europe) and ends November 3.
Key points
- No realm list: you choose a ruleset, Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP (added on October 22, 2026), with Hardcore later, in winter.
- Rulesets can't be changed and don't group together in the world; factions stay separate.
- On the PvP ruleset, all the characters of an account must be of one faction.
- No French realm is announced: set your Preferred Online Language, account-wide, with a 24-hour cooldown.
- Names have two parts, are unique per region, and can be reserved from October 27 to November 3, 2026 with a pack, for up to three characters.
Are there realms in WoW Forever?
No. WoW Forever is realmless: "instead of picking a server, you will pick a ruleset", Blizzard Support says. At launch on November 4, 2026, the rulesets are Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP, and Hardcore comes later. Each ruleset is "its own large ecosystem", and "the game is still broken up by region", so there is no realm list to choose from and no realm name to look for.
In practice, you choose your region and a ruleset. According to Method.gg, you keep one World of Warcraft account per region as usual, and launch keeps the usual regional servers. The October 21, 2026 stress test already ran "on its proper regional hardware", Blizzard's Kaivax wrote. Blizzard has not published how players are spread inside a ruleset.
Which rulesets can you choose in WoW Forever?
WoW Forever has five rulesets. Normal, where PvP "requires mutual consent", plays the role of a PvE realm; PvP allows only one faction per account; Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP complete the launch lineup, the latter added on October 22, 2026; Hardcore arrives after launch, in winter according to Blizzard's roadmap. Both factions can be played on Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore; Blizzard has not said yet for Roleplay-PvP.
| Ruleset | Available | Main rule | Factions on one account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | At launch, November 4, 2026 | PvP only with mutual consent | Both |
| PvP | At launch, November 4, 2026 | Character creation can be limited for one faction to keep balance | One |
| Roleplaying | At launch, November 4, 2026 | Stricter name rules, according to Method.gg | Both |
| Roleplay-PvP | At launch, November 4, 2026 (announced October 22) | No rule published beyond its name as of October 25, 2026 | Not announced |
| Hardcore | After launch, in winter | Fully enclosed, no battlegrounds; a character who dies can move to another ruleset | Both |
Players had asked for an RP-PvP ruleset in a forum thread of more than 4,680 posts. On October 22, 2026, Blizzard's Aggrend answered: "We will add a Roleplay-PVP Ruleset for launch on November 4", and Blizzard plans to open it for name reservation from October 27. Whether it keeps the PvP ruleset's one faction per account is not announced as of October 25, 2026. Hardcore has its own guide, and world PvP and battlegrounds are covered in our PvP guide.
Can you play with friends on another ruleset in WoW Forever?
Not in the open world. In WoW Forever you can't group across rulesets and factions stay separate, but battlegrounds can mix players from every ruleset except Hardcore. A character can't change ruleset either: you need a new character on the other one. Collections and Legacy points are account-wide; progress made in Hardcore also counts on the other rulesets, but nothing flows back into Hardcore.
The only exception: a Hardcore character who dies can be transferred to another ruleset, PvP included. Agree on a ruleset with your friends before launch, since a character stays on the one it was created on. Your Legacy points follow you whatever you pick.
Can you play both factions on the WoW Forever PvP ruleset?
No. On the WoW Forever PvP ruleset, all the characters of an account must belong to one faction, Alliance or Horde. To keep the factions balanced, Blizzard will use systems like Season of Discovery's, where "new character creation could be temporarily limited for a faction". Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore let you play both factions on the same account; Blizzard has not said yet whether Roleplay-PvP follows the PvP rule.
The Skyborne pick their faction at character creation, so the rule applies to them too. Icy Veins also writes that layers are balanced by faction on the PvP ruleset; Blizzard's own text only describes the limits on character creation.
Is there a French realm in WoW Forever?
No. As of October 25, 2026, Blizzard has announced no French realm, and no realm for any other language, in WoW Forever. The only tool is the Preferred Online Language setting (Options > System > Languages and Social), which applies to the whole account and can be changed once every 24 hours. Blizzard has not published the list of languages it offers.
Step by step, with the community channels and tools to play across languages: French, German or Spanish servers in WoW Forever.
According to Method.gg, your language preference is one of the factors that place you in a layer, with your guild and the players you grouped with. Blizzard had not answered the threads on its French forums asking how servers will be organized as of October 25, 2026.
How does layering work in WoW Forever?
WoW Forever splits players into layers, which Blizzard's beta notes call world instances, but Blizzard has not explained how they are formed. On the beta, a fix on October 1, 2026 stopped moving party leaders to another instance when a group forms or changes. According to Method.gg, your language preference, your guild and your recent group mates count when the game places you in a layer.
- Recent allies: MassivelyOP reports that players you grouped with are pushed into your layer, and their name is shown in a different color.
- Guilds: guildmates are often placed in the same layer, according to Icy Veins.
- Complaints: on October 15, 2026, Icy Veins reported strong player complaints about layer changes at zone borders, on boats and when leaving a group. Blizzard had not answered requests for an opt-out by then.
- Stress test: during the October 21, 2026 stress test, players on Blizzard's forums described a crowded Stormwind and characters flickering between layers. Blizzard posted no results of the test as of October 25.
How do names and name reservation work in WoW Forever?
WoW Forever uses two-part names, a first name and a second name, unique per region, and a family name can be shared by your characters. Early name reservation opens on October 27, 2026 (6 p.m. CET in Europe, 1 p.m. PDT in North America) and ends November 3, first come, first served, for up to three characters across all rulesets, with any Forever pack: Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack, Warcraft Forever Collection or Collector's Edition.
| Rule | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Format | First name and second name, unique per region; the filter checks both parts together | Blizzard |
| Family name | A second name can be shared by your characters | Blizzard |
| Hide your second name | Options > Nameplates > My Secondary Name (it still shows in chat) | Blizzard |
| Length and letters | 2 to 12 characters, no triple letters, no apostrophes or hyphens, accents allowed | Method.gg |
| Roleplaying | Stricter name rules | Method.gg |
| Name change | No paid name change for now | Method.gg |
| Reservation | Opens October 27, 2026 at 6 p.m. CET in Europe, 1 p.m. PDT in North America and 7 a.m. on October 28 in Korea and Taiwan; ends November 3; up to 3 characters across all rulesets, with a pack | Blizzard |
| Ruleset at reservation | Chosen when you create the character; Blizzard plans Roleplay-PvP to be available from October 27 | Blizzard |
Character creation opens on October 27, so "You won't have to wait until the game launches to make these big decisions", Kaivax wrote when the beta closed on October 23. Invite-A-Friend codes don't qualify for the reservation, and Blizzard's support staff adds that "there isn't any early access associated with that". On the beta, names that broke the rules were changed by force and some testers lost beta access; customer support "cannot and will not assist with any appeals". A ban on the beta applies only to the beta account, so it doesn't touch your name reservations. Launch time by city is in our release guide.
Can you transfer characters or play across regions in WoW Forever?
Not at launch. Icy Veins reports that WoW Forever "will not launch with the ability for characters to transfer", no source mentions copying characters from Classic Era or modern WoW, and beta progress is not carried over. The only announced transfer moves a Hardcore character who died to another ruleset. Cross-region play is "not possible right now", developers said at PAX Aus in October 2026.
Clay Stone and Holly Longdale gave technical reasons and regulatory differences between countries, according to Icy Veins and JudgeHype. The number of characters per account has not been announced either: asked about it, Holly Longdale answered "At least 50, right?" (Icy Veins, October 12, 2026).
