Onyxia attunement in WoW Forever: the Drakefire Amulet questline for Alliance and Horde
Yuki Requiem6 min read
In short
To enter Onyxia's Lair in WoW Forever, every raid member must carry the Drakefire Amulet, earned through a faction questline Blizzard detailed on October 20, 2026. The Alliance starts with "Dragonkin Menace" in the Burning Steppes, the Horde with "Blood and Thunder" in the Badlands. Both end by taking the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion from General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire. The raid opens on December 9, 2026.
Key points
- Each raid member needs the Drakefire Amulet in the bags to enter Onyxia's Lair; it does not need to be equipped (Blizzard, October 20, 2026).
- Alliance: starts with "Dragonkin Menace" from Helendis Riverhorn in the Burning Steppes, through Blackrock Depths and Stormwind.
- Horde: starts with "Blood and Thunder" from Warlord Goretooth in Kargath, through Lower Blackrock Spire, Rexxar and Emberstrife.
- Both end in Upper Blackrock Spire, on General Drakkisath, and Onyxia's Lair opens on December 9, 2026.
- Molten Core has no attunement to prepare: it is not on Blizzard's WoW Forever roadmap as of October 31, 2026.
Do you need an attunement for Onyxia in WoW Forever?
Yes. Onyxia's Lair opens on December 9, 2026 as a 40-player, level 60 raid in Dustwallow Marsh, and Blizzard says each raid member must carry the Drakefire Amulet to enter: in the bags, it does not need to be equipped. Each player earns it through a faction-specific questline, so a raid of 40 needs 40 amulets. Blizzard advises starting early and leaving time for several trips into high-level dungeons.

How do you do the Onyxia attunement as Alliance?
The Alliance questline starts in the Burning Steppes with "Dragonkin Menace" from Helendis Riverhorn, then runs through six quests named "The True Masters", Blackrock Depths and Marshal Windsor's jail break, Blizzard's step-by-step of October 20, 2026 says. It moves on to "The Great Masquerade" in Stormwind and ends in Upper Blackrock Spire, where you take the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion from General Drakkisath.
| Quest | What you do |
|---|---|
| Dragonkin Menace | Pick it up from Helendis Riverhorn in the Burning Steppes. |
| The True Masters, six quests | Investigate the Black Dragonflight's influence on the Blackrock clan, up to Marshal Maxwell at Morgan's Vigil, Burning Steppes. |
| Marshal Windsor | Go into Blackrock Depths to recover Marshal Windsor, or proof of his demise. |
| Abandoned Hope | Windsor sends you back to Marshal Maxwell. |
| A Crumpled Up Note | The note drops from enemies in Blackrock Depths and starts the quest: bring it to Windsor in his cell. |
| A Shred of Hope | Retrieve Windsor's lost information from Golem Lord Argelmach and General Angerforge in Blackrock Depths. |
| Jail Break! | Help Windsor escape Blackrock Depths, then return to Marshal Maxwell. |
| Stormwind Rendezvous | Go to Squire Rowe at the gates of Stormwind and speak with him to beckon Marshal Windsor. |
| The Great Masquerade | Gather allies for this quest in Stormwind; speak with Squire Rowe if Windsor is not there. |
| The Dragon's Eye | Highlord Bolvar Fordragon sends you across Azeroth to find someone able to help (Haleh in Winterspring, in the Classic data). |
| Drakefire Amulet | In Upper Blackrock Spire, take the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion from General Drakkisath and receive the amulet. |
How do you do the Onyxia attunement as Horde?
The Horde questline starts in the Badlands with "Blood and Thunder" from Warlord Goretooth in Kargath, goes through Blackrock Spire twice, then to Orgrimmar, Rexxar in Desolace and Myranda the Hag in the Western Plaguelands, Blizzard's step-by-step of October 20, 2026 says. Emberstrife in Dustwallow Marsh then sets four "The Test of Skulls" quests, and it ends with General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire.
| Quest | What you do |
|---|---|
| Blood and Thunder | Pick it up from Warlord Goretooth in Kargath, in the Badlands. |
| Warlord's Command | It takes you through Lower Blackrock Spire. |
| Eitrigg's Wisdom | Goretooth sends you to report to Eitrigg in Orgrimmar, then to seek counsel with Thrall. |
| For The Horde! | Claim the head of Warchief Rend Blackhand for Thrall. Blizzard sends you back to Lower Blackrock Spire; the client's boss list and Classic place Rend in Upper Blackrock Spire (10 players): to check in game. |
| What the Wind Carries | Listen to Thrall's discoveries. |
| The Champion of the Horde | Seek Rexxar, who wanders the roads of Desolace. |
| The Testament of Rexxar | Deliver his testament to Myranda the Hag in the Western Plaguelands. |
| Oculus Illusions | Obtain Black Dragonspawn Eyes for Myranda. |
| Emberstrife | Use your Amulet of Draconic Subversion to seek out the ancient drake Emberstrife in Dustwallow Marsh. |
| The Test of Skulls, four quests | Bring Emberstrife the skulls of Scryer, Somnus, Chronalis and Axtroz. |
| Ascension... | Emberstrife gives you the Dull Drakefire Amulet: bring it back to Rexxar in Desolace. |
| Blood of the Black Dragon Champion | In Upper Blackrock Spire, take it from General Drakkisath, then return to Rexxar for the Drakefire Amulet. |
What level and group do you need for the Onyxia attunement?
Blizzard sets the raid at level 60 and gives no level for the quests. In the Classic data of our quest pages, the Alliance chain opens from level 48 and the Horde's Warlord's Command from level 55, to confirm on Forever. Bring friends: Blizzard warns of elite quests and several dungeon trips. Blackrock Depths and Lower Blackrock Spire take 5 players, Upper Blackrock Spire takes 10.
Do you have to redo the Onyxia attunement on every character?
As far as anyone has said, yes. Blizzard writes that "each player will need to earn" the amulet, and JudgeHype's dungeon and raid list says it is done on each character. Developers said it stays required, in JudgeHype's report of the official podcast, and the same podcast teased more attunement-type quests later, MassivelyOP reports.
Is there a Molten Core attunement in WoW Forever?
There is nothing to prepare for now: Molten Core is not announced for WoW Forever. Blizzard's roadmap names no Classic raid besides Onyxia's Lair, and Blizzard sets the story of Forever "before Molten Core". The summer 2027 "revamped iconic raid" is not named as of October 31, 2026. Blizzard names no attunement for the two other raids of December 9, the Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit.
How do you prepare for Onyxia once you have the amulet?
Build fire resistance and get ready to reposition, Blizzard advises: the fight has three phases and powerful fire attacks that "punish an unprepared raid". Check that the Drakefire Amulet is in your inventory before you enter. All raids are "currently planned to reset each week", without a reset day named. Defeating Onyxia gives one Legacy point, and the bosses and rewards are in our raids guide.
