How many rares are there in WoW Forever?

Our Classic creature data places 334 rare creatures in 40 open-world zones of WoW Forever's maps: 256 rares and 78 rare elites, plus 23 rare elites in dungeons. This data comes from cMaNGOS classic-db, the base of our NPC pages, because the Forever client ships no creature names. Blizzard's BlizzCon Deep Dive recap promised hundreds of new drops from rare creatures, so their loot is worth checking at launch.

  • Rare and rare elite: the game gives creatures a rank; we list rank "rare" (256 in the open world) and rank "rare elite" (78), marked as such in the tables.
  • Left out: four creatures that only appear during world events, such as the Scourge invasion rares.
  • Levels: the rare's level in Classic's data, and for each zone the level range of WoW Forever's group finder on the beta.
  • Names: in English on both versions of this guide: neither the Forever client nor cMaNGOS ships French creature names.

The other rares of Classic's dungeons, such as Lord Roccor in Blackrock Depths or Timmy the Cruel in Stratholme, are boss encounters in Forever's files, as they already were in Classic Era's. Bosses and levels of every dungeon are in our dungeons guide.

Which rares are new in WoW Forever?

No source we can read lists WoW Forever's new rares yet. The Forever client ships no creature names, and our creature data is Classic's, so the new zones such as Zephras Isle, the Riverglades and Mount Hyjal, and the nine new dungeons, have no rare in it. Blizzard did promise hundreds of new drops from rare creatures, and Method cited Wintersaber Hide Lined Gloves, +6% mount speed in Winterspring.

The NPC pages fill with what players see on the live game: once loot records come in, a creature's page shows its real drops on Forever, and creatures missing from Classic's data can get a page of their own. Until then, treat every row above as Classic's list, to confirm in game.

How do you find a rare's spawn point in WoW Forever?

Each WoW Forever rare in our tables links to its NPC page, which draws its spawn points from Classic's data on our map of the zone, with its level, type, the quests it is tied to and its Classic loot. Rares that share a spot with other creatures may not be up when you arrive. For hunters, our pet finder lists the 64 tameable rares of Classic.

  • NPC pages: every rare above, for example Mother Fang in Elwynn Forest, with its spawn spots on our zone map.
  • Hunters: the hunter pet finder lists the tameable beasts of Classic, rares included, with their zones and abilities.
  • All creatures: the NPC list searches every creature of Classic's data by name, zone and level.
  • Leveling routes: our leveling guide draws the same zone maps with quests step by step.
