Which class should you play in WoW Forever? Roles, armor, pets, races and what changes for all nine

13 min read

In short

WoW Forever has nine classes, and we don't rank them: choose by what you want to do. Warriors, paladins and druids can tank; priests, paladins, shamans and druids can heal; all nine deal damage. Hunters and warlocks have a permanent pet, both factions can play every class, and dual spec opens at level 40. Blizzard's own advice: "Try another class if your first choice does not feel right."

Key points

  • To tank: warrior, paladin or druid. To heal: priest, paladin, shaman or druid. Every class can deal damage.
  • Hunters and warlocks are the two classes with a permanent companion; shamans place totems instead.
  • Every class is open to both factions: dwarves bring the shaman to the Alliance, undead bring the paladin to the Horde.
  • No class needs a pack: only the Skyborne race does, and every class has other races.
  • Talents start at level 10 and Dual Specialization opens at level 40, according to Blizzard.

Which class should you pick in WoW Forever?

WoW Forever has nine classes: warrior, paladin, hunter, rogue, priest, shaman, mage, warlock and druid. We don't rank them, and Blizzard's starter guide of October 28, 2026 says "There is no single correct way to play". Start from the role you want in a group, then compare armor, resource and pet in the table below. Our six-question class quiz suggests three classes.

The nine classes of WoW Forever (roles, armor and resource: our class pages; the level 40 armor step is Classic's rule)

The game files of build 1.60.1.70707 confirm who can wear mail (warrior, paladin, hunter, shaman) and plate (warrior, paladin). They can't confirm the step at level 40, Classic's rule, because the client has no trainer lists. In Blizzard's words, your class "determines how you play: whether you fight up close, attack from a distance, cast spells, protect a group, heal allies, or combine several roles".

Which classes can tank in WoW Forever?

Three WoW Forever classes can tank: warrior, paladin and druid. Vanguard lets warriors Charge in Defensive Stance (Blizzard, September 30, 2026), Seal of Fury makes a paladin's Judgment taunt (Blizzard, October 15, 2026), and a redesigned Thick Hide makes Defense gear count for druids. Shamans, warlocks and hunters are not tank classes, though some can hold enemies in small groups.

  • Warrior: Protection keeps the tank role, Rage from damage taken no longer depends on your armor, Thunder Clap works in Defensive Stance, and Defensive Stance's threat bonus rises to 80% (was 30%) in Blizzard's notes of November 2, 2026, a change not yet in the game files on November 3.
  • Paladin: Righteous Fury and Seal of Fury at level 10 (with Seal of Fury, Judgment taunts from 10 yards), Consecration at level 20 with high threat on 4 targets, and Templar's Bulwark, an absorb based on maximum health. Since November 2, Righteous Fury adds 33% to all threat and 90% more from Holy damage.
  • Druid: Bear Form and Growl at level 10, a 115% threat bonus in Bear Form in Blizzard's notes of November 2 (was 50%), Lacerate as a Feral talent and Primal Bite at 31 points, and armor that scales with Defense skill through Thick Hide.
  • Shaman: with Spirit Weapons and Rockbiter, Enhancement can "serve as a temporary tank in small group gameplay" (Blizzard, October 7, 2026). Developers said a shaman tank is not an officially supported spec at launch (JudgeHype, October 12, 2026).
  • Hunter and warlock: Blizzard says hunters can use their pet as a tank in solo and small group play. The Voidwalker gains threat from the talent Demonic Brand (Blizzard, October 7, 2026), and no warlock tank is announced.

Which classes can heal in WoW Forever?

Four WoW Forever classes can heal: priest, paladin, shaman and druid. Each gets new tools from Blizzard: Penance and Prayer of Mending for the priest, plus Holy Binding since Blizzard's notes of November 2, Holy Shock at 21 points for the paladin, Riptide at 31 points for the shaman and Wild Growth at 31 points for the druid. All four can also bring a dead player back to life.

  • Priest: Penance (Discipline, 21 points), Holy Binding (Holy, 16 points, which replaced Binding Heal in Blizzard's notes of November 2, 2026: half of a Flash Heal on someone else heals you too), Prayer of Mending (Holy, 31 points), and Holy Precision, up to 18% Holy hit so healers don't need hit gear. Resurrection at level 10.
  • Paladin: Holy Shock on a 10-second cooldown, Infusion of Light, Oath of Light (new on November 2), and Lay on Hands on a 20-minute cooldown instead of 1 hour. Redemption at level 12.
  • Shaman: Riptide (31 points; Blizzard's notes of November 2 make it heal over time only, on a 12-second cooldown, a change not yet in the game files on November 3), Water Shield (11 points) and totems that last 5 minutes. Ancestral Spirit at level 12.
  • Druid: Wild Growth heals the target's whole party, pets included, with a 3-second cast since November 2, and Swiftmend (16 points) no longer consumes the heal over time but needs your own Rejuvenation or Regrowth on the target. Bloom replaced Gift of the Earthmother on November 2. Revive, new and out of combat only, at level 12, and Rebirth at level 20.

Resurrection levels come from the game files of build 1.60.1.70707 (first rank). Priests can read how downranking and the five-second rule work in our downranking guide and priest guide.

Which classes deal melee or ranged damage in WoW Forever?

All nine WoW Forever classes can deal damage. In melee: warrior, rogue, paladin, Enhancement shaman and druid in cat form. At range: hunter, mage, warlock, Shadow priest, Elemental shaman and Balance druid. Blizzard's hunter article of September 30, 2026 also turns the Survival tree toward melee, and its September 13 recap merges hit and critical strike across spells, melee and ranged.

  • Survival hunter: Strider Kick (21 points) and Lacerating Strikes (31 points) support melee. The class keeps its 8-yard dead zone and has no interrupt; Blizzard says hunters cannot stun, though two talents still stun for 3 seconds: Intimidation, through your pet, and Improved Concussive Shot, with up to a 20% chance.
  • Retribution paladin: Unsealed Wrath, the 31-point talent since November 2, 2026 (it replaces Twist of Light), stores your active Seal on each melee attack and lets an attack with another Seal trigger the stored ones; Champion of the Light turns Intellect into spell damage.
  • Shadow priest: Shadowform allows all non-healing spells and cuts the mana cost of Shadow spells by 50%.
  • Shaman: Lava Burst for Elemental, which Blizzard's notes of November 2 replace with Call of Thunder, and Stormstrike at 16 points for Enhancement, whose cooldown they cut to 6 seconds (neither change was in the game files on November 3); Rage of the Farseer at 31 points.

Blizzard's recap of September 13, 2026 adds that bonus healing also gives a third as much bonus damage. Our talents guide compares the milestone talents of every tree.

Which WoW Forever classes have a pet or summons?

Two WoW Forever classes keep a permanent companion: the hunter, who tames a beast from level 10, and the warlock, who summons an Imp at level 1, a Voidwalker at 10, a Succubus or Incubus at 20 and a Felhunter at 30, in the game files of build 1.60.1.70707. Blizzard says hunter pets now scale with the hunter's gear, and warlock demons scale from the warlock's stats.

  • Hunter: the Fox is a new family, every family has its own unique ability, and our hunter pet finder lists the beasts of Classic to confirm in game. Lone Wolf (Marksmanship, 11 points) gives +20% damage with no pet, and Summon Hawk (Beast Mastery) calls up to 2 hawks for 18 seconds.
  • Warlock: Inferno at level 50 and Ritual of Doom at level 60 complete the summons. Demonic Sacrifice lasts 2 hours, and Demonic Pact (31 points) keeps it when you summon another demon (Blizzard, October 7, 2026).
  • Shaman: no pet, but totems. Call of the Elements summons four preset totems from level 20, after a 3-second cast.
  • The six other classes: no permanent companion in the game files.

What does each WoW Forever class bring to a group?

Every WoW Forever class brings something beyond its role: Battle Shout for warriors, auras and blessings for paladins, Power Word: Fortitude for priests, totems for shamans, food, water and portals for mages, healthstones and summons for warlocks, Mark of the Wild for druids, Trueshot Aura for hunters. Blizzard's rogue article of October 7, 2026 frames Sap, which no longer breaks Stealth, as crowd control for groups.

Blizzard lowered Battle Shout's attack power "to compensate for both factions having both Shaman and Paladin buffs" (September 30, 2026). Shaman totems changed too: Windfury Totem and Flametongue Totem are now party buffs (October 7, 2026). Professions add to this: camp objects give variants of class buffs that don't stack with them, as our camping guide explains.

Which races can play each class in WoW Forever?

Every WoW Forever class is open to both factions, in the game's race and class table. Six combinations are new: human hunter, dwarf shaman and gnome priest for the Alliance, orc mage, troll warlock and undead paladin for the Horde (Blizzard, October 29, 2026). The Skyborne can be druids, hunters, rogues and warriors, plus mages for the Alliance or shamans for the Horde.

Only the Skyborne race needs a pack, the Heroic Pack or higher, says Blizzard; each class also has races that don't. Each race page gives its four racials with their Forever values, without a ranking. To choose a side first, read our Alliance or Horde guide, and for the new race our Skyborne guide.

What does WoW Forever change for each class?

WoW Forever reworks the talents of all nine classes, with a new 16-point milestone, and Blizzard's class deep dives also change their basics: warriors get Victory Rush at level 20, paladins keep their seal through Judgment, hunters use traps in combat, rogues Sap without leaving Stealth and priests all get Fear Ward at level 20. The articles run from September 30 to October 15, 2026, and Blizzard's notes of November 2 raise every class's damage.

Can you try another class or spec in WoW Forever?

Yes, and WoW Forever rewards it. Blizzard's starter guide says to "Try another class if your first choice does not feel right", and Legacy points are account-wide: each class gives 3 of them, at levels 25, 45 and 60. Within a class, talents start at level 10, change at a class trainer in a major city, and Dual Specialization opens at level 40.

Dual Specialization gives one character two talent setups, such as a healing spec for dungeons and a damage spec for questing. Blizzard has not announced its price or the launch price of a respec: see our talents guide. Blizzard also says alts are not required, since "All character advantages can be unlocked on a single character" (October 29, 2026). Our Legacy planner counts the points each class would add, and our leveling guide covers the road to 60.
